Adoption Process

Second chances happen often at the Humane Society of Lake County (HSLC).  Through expert care and a whole lot of love and commitment, we find homes for several animals each year. There are no time or space limits for animals in our adoption program.

We do same day adoptions and adoptions are first-come, first-served as long as it's a good match! Since the individual needs of each animal and adopter vary, our staff and volunteers will work with you one-on-one to help find the right match. It’s recommended that you bring all dogs currently in your household to meet the potential new animal to ensure they will get along. The adoption process generally takes at least an hour and wait times vary. We recommend that you allow ample time to learn about your new companion and complete the process.

Adoption Application & Fees

All potential adopters must complete an Adoption Application. The online application can be found on the dogs for adoption or cats for adoption page. HSLC staff will review all applications and reserve the right to deny any application. All adopters must provide a valid photo ID and must be at least 18 years old.

Dog Adoption Fee: $150.00 / $200.00 for dogs who complete a training program

Cat Adoption Fee: $75.00

All animals are fully vetted (for their age), microchipped, spayed/neutered, heartworm tested, FeLV and FIV tested and on flea & tick preventatives. Any animal waiting to be spayed or neutered can be pre-adopted following the same adoption procedure. That animal may not go home until after it has been spayed or neutered.
